Handbook of Bottom Founded Offshore Structures: Part 1. General Features of Offshore Structures As ever more sophisticated computer applications threaten engineers with a risky obsolescence, this Handbook will be a valuable reference for both engineering students and practicing professionals who seek a fundamental understanding of engineering’s underlying theories and technologies. Intended to help offshore engineers acquire and sustain relevant expertise in some notoriously difficult subjects, this installment stimulates reflection on and critical evaluation of the models used and the solutions found. Offshore engineering continues to develop and expand rapidly. While in the public eye its focus has shifted towards subsea and floating developments, bottom founded structures remain the industry’s dependable workhorses, far outnumbering subsea and floating applications. Moreover, the knowledge and technology that have literally pushed the boundaries of offshore engineering into more demanding environments and deeper waters have been largely pioneered by bottom founded structures. As such, the Handbook will be generally applicable to offshore structures of all types. Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

Reconditioning and Maintenance of Concrete Structures The rehabilitation and maintenance of concrete structures takes place in the tense atmosphere of the different interests of client, building authorities, construction companies and material manufacturer. All involved parties should be interested in a general logical guaranteed concept of repair and maintenance measures necessary for a specified lifetime. This book gives a comprehensive overview about technology, corrosion mechanisms and measures for the rehabilitation of concrete. The fundamentals of inventory and damage diagnosis and the influence of the applied concrete basis materials as well as the various attack mechanisms are explained in detail. Numerous indications for the tailor-made choice and planning of maintenance measures are given. The work is constant practically oriented and reflects the rich treasure of experience of the authors. Some "rules for good concrete" help to avoid damages such as the design of robust constructions, the choice and composition of basis materials, the detailed work schedule and concrete curing and specialized experienced staff.
Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Tall Buildings: Structural Systems and Aerodynamic Form
8/20/2014
by Mehmet Halis Gunel, Huseyin Emre Ilgin ISBN: 9781138021778 ISBN-13: 9781138021778
[ hide overview ]

Tall Buildings: Structural Systems and Aerodynamic Form The structural challenges of building 800 metres into the sky are substantial, and include several factors which do not affect low-rise construction. This book focusses on these areas specifically to provide the architectural and structural knowledge which must be taken into account in order to design tall buildings successfully. In presenting examples of steel, reinforced concrete, and composite structural systems for such buildings, it is shown that wind load has a very important effect on the architectural and structural design. The aerodynamic approach to tall buildings is considered in this context, as is earthquake induced lateral loading.
Case studies of some of the world’s most iconic buildings, illustrated with full colour photographs, structural plans and axonometrics, will bring to life the design challenges which they presented to architects and structural engineers. The Empire State Building, the Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and the HSB Turning Torso are just a few examples of the buildings whose real-life specifications are used to explain and illustrate core design principles, and their subsequent effect on the finished structure. Reinforced Concrete Design to Eurocodes: Design Theory and Examples From the Publisher: I do not know of an equivalent textbook that has the scope of this one. …The list of topics is very comprehensive. …This would be a very good book to recommend for a course in the structural design of concrete. …This book is a one stop shop for the structural design of concrete structures - the book for structural concrete designers to have 'at their elbow' and students to have to when learning about the design of concrete structure. I know of no other book that covers such a range of topics including: water retaining structures, comprehensive treatment of the Strut-tie method with a link to finite element output. Proper background to design of statically indeterminate structures with a proper treatment of joint rotation capacity, comprehensive treatment of: yieldline method, Hillerborg's strip method, design using elastic stress fields, etc and the design of whole structure as opposed to individual elements only. …The explanations of the theory are clearly expressed and there are lots of good examples. Of special importance are the examples that cover complete systems and components rather than just single topics. Concrete Structures for Wind Turbines
10/21/2013
by Jurgen Grunberg, Joachim Gohlmann ISBN: 9783433030417 ISBN-13: 9783433030417
[ hide overview ]

Concrete Structures for Wind Turbines The wind energy industry in Germany has an excellent global standing when it comes to the development and construction of wind turbines. Germany currently represents the world's largest market for wind energy. The ongoing development of ever more powerful wind turbines plus additional requirements for the design and construction of their offshore foundation structures exceeds the actual experiences gained so far in the various disciplines concerned. This book gives a comprehensive overview for planning and structural design analysis of reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete wind turbine towers for both, onshore and offshore wind turbines. Wind turbines represent structures subjected to highly dynamic loading patterns. Therefore, for the design of loadbearing structures, fatigue effects - and not just maximum loads - are extremely important, in particular in the connections and joints of concrete and hybrid structures. There multi-axial stress conditions occure which so far are not covered by the design codes. The specific actions, the nonlinear behaviour and modeling for the structural analysis are explained. Design and verification with a focus on fatigue are adressed. The chapter Manufacturing includes hybrid structures, segmental construction of pre-stressed concrete towers and offshore wind turbine foundations.
Concrete Durability
2/23/2013
by Thomas Dyer ISBN: 9780415564755 ISBN-13: 9780415564755
[ hide overview ]

Concrete Durability As more importance is being placed on the whole-life performance of structures, demand is growing for long service lives with minimal maintenance requirements. Indeed it is increasingly common for infrastructure to be kept in operation beyond its originally intended service life. And over the past decade the introduction across Europe of new standards has drawn more attention to the issue of durability of concrete structures. Thus, the durability of construction materials is of more concern to civil engineers than ever before. Concrete is highly durable and also provides protection to steel reinforcement. However, concrete structures are frequently required to function in a wide range of multi-aggressive environments for long periods of service. And measures to optimize their durability performance often conflict with structural and aesthetic design requirements. This book examines each of the major physical and chemical mechanisms which threaten the durability of concrete and addresses the options available for achieving appropriate durability, with emphasis on the approaches addressed by standards. It also covers procedures for durability assessment and testing of structures, and repair and rehabilitation methods. It is has been written with an audience of graduate students and young professionals in mind. Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

Failures in Concrete Structures: Case Studies in Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Some lessons are only learned from mistakes but, it's much cheaper to learn from someone else's mistakes than to have to do so from your own. Drawing on over fifty years of working with concrete structures, Robin Whittle examines the problems which he has seen occur and shows how they could have been avoided.
The first and largest part of the book tells the stories of a number of cases where things have gone wrong with concrete structures. Each case is analyzed to identify its cause and how it might have been prevented. It then looks at how failures in structural modelling can lead to big problems if they are not identified before construction is undertaken. Beyond this it examines how contract arrangements can encourage or prevent problems in the designing and building processes. It concludes with an examination of the role research and development in preventing failures.
By identifying the differences between shoddy economizations and genuine efficiency savings, this book offers savings in the short term which won't be at the expense of a structure's long-term performance. Invaluable reading if you're designing or building concrete structures and want to avoid problems which could be expensive or embarrassing further down the line.

Most texts on structures for architects focus narrowly on the mathematical analysis of isolated structural components, yet Building Structures looks at the general concepts with selected computations to understand the role of the structure as a building subsystem-without the complicated mathematics.
New to this edition is a??complete discussion of the LRFD method of design, supplemented by the ASD method, in addition to:
  • The fundamentals of structural analysis and design for architects
  • A glossary, exercise problems, and a companion website and instructor's manual
  • Material ideally suited for preparing for the ARE exam

  • Profusely illustrated throughout with drawings and photographs, and including new case studies, Building Structures, Third Edition is perfect for nonengineers to understand and visualize structural design.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

by Lambert M. Surhone (Editor), Mariam T. Tennoe (Editor), Susan F. Henssonow (Editor) ISBN: 6133198699 ISBN-13: 9786133198692
    [ hide overview ]

Prestressed Concrete High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Prestressed concrete is a method for overcoming concrete's natural weakness in tension. It can be used to produce beams, floors or bridges with a longer span than is practical with ordinary reinforced concrete. Prestressing tendons (generally of high tensile steel cable or rods) are used to provide a clamping load which produces a compressive stress that offsets the tensile stress that the concrete compression member would otherwise experience due to a bending load. Traditional reinforced concrete is based on the use of steel reinforcement bars, rebars, inside poured concrete. Prestressing can be accomplished in three ways: pre-tensioned concrete, and bonded or unbonded post-tensioned concrete. Pre-tensioned concrete is cast around already tensioned tendons. This method produces a good bond between the tendon and concrete, which both protects the tendon from corrosion and allows for direct transfer of tension.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

by Karuna Moy Ghosh ISBN: 1439835713 ISBN-13: 9781439835715
    [ hide overview ]

Practical Design of Steel Structures Practical Design of Steel Structures presents practical design examples and calculations for a multi-bay, steel-framed industrial building under the actions of a variety of loads, including travelling crane loads, dead and imposed loads, and wind forces. For the first time, engineers and students alike can appreciate the complete design process through the analysis of the whole structure and the design of structural members. The calculations are clearly presented, employing a step-by-step approach stating the design philosophy, design considerations and clarifying the referred clauses of the code of practice.
However, before analysing the structure and the design of its structural elements, it is necessary to understand the theoretical background and how the structure behaves under the actions of various loads, based upon practical design and field experience. The author considers the structural arrangement with respect to selection and availability of construction material, the cost within the scheduled construction program and the overall budget. In addition he examines the buildability of the structure with regard to space restriction, method of construction and the geotechnical conditions of the site.
The essence of this book is the simplicity and clarity of approach in the complete analysis of the whole structure and the structural design of every member. Augmented by design sketches, this book will prove valuable to practising engineers in design offices and students on structures courses.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

Structural and Stress Analysis: Theories, Tutorials and Examples Summarizing major concepts and key points, this book tests student's knowledge of the principal theories in structural and stress analysis. Its main feature is helping students to understand the subject by asking and answering conceptual questions. Each chapter begins with a summary of key issues and relevant formulas. A 'key points' review identifies important concepts which are essential for students' understanding of the chapter. Numerical examples are used to illustrate these concepts and demonstrate the application of the formulas. A short discussion of the problem is provided, before the solution is revealed, to ensure that students know not only how but also why a formula should be used. Basic Structural Theory
    May 2008
    by Jacques Heyman ISBN: 0521897947 ISBN-13: 9780521897945
    [ hide overview ]

Basic Structural Theory This text introduces the basic equations of the theory of structures. Conventional presentations of these equations follow the ideas of elastic analysis, introduced nearly two hundred years ago. The present book is written against the background of advances made in structural theory during the last fifty years, notably by the introduction of so-called plastic theory. Tests on real structures in the twentieth century revealed that structural states predicted by elastic analysis cannot in fact be observed in practice, whereas plastic ideas can be used to give accurate estimates of strength. Strength is discussed in the first part of this book without reference to equations of elastic deformation. However, the designer is concerned also with stiffness, for which elastic analysis is needed, and the standard equations (suitable, for example, for computer programming) are presented. Finally, stability is analyzed, which again is essentially an elastic phenomenon, and it is shown that a higher "factor of safety" is required to guard against buckling than that required to guarantee straightforward strength. The emphasis throughout is on the derivation and application of the structural equations, rather than on details of their solution (nowadays best done by computer), and the numerical examples are deliberately kept simple.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

    Computational Contact Mechanics
    August 2002
    by P. Wriggers ISBN: 0471496804 ISBN-13: 9780471496809
    [ hide overview ]

Computational Contact Mechanics Boundary value problems involving contact are important for industrial applications in both mechanical and civil engineering, such as structural foundations, bearings, metal forming processes, rubber sealings, drilling problems, crash analysis of cars, rolling contact between car tyres and the road, cooling of electronic devices, and many more. Other applications are related to biomechanical engineering design, where human joints, implants or teeth are considered. Due to this variety, contact problems today are combined either with large elastic or inelastic deformations, including time-dependent responses. Thermal coupling may also have to be considered, and even stability behaviour has to be linked to contact, such as wrinkling arising in metal forming problems.
The topic of computational contact is described in depth here, providing different formulations, algorithms and discretisation techniques for contact problems that have been established in the geometrically linear and nonlinear ranges. This book provides the necessary continuum mechanics background. Special geometrical relations needed to set up the contact constraints are derived, and constitutive equations stemming from tribology which are valid at the contact interface are discussed in detail, without going into a numerical treatment. Solid and beam contact is considered, as is contact of unstable systems and thermomechanical contact. The algorithmic aspects cover a broad range of solution methods. Additionally, adaptive discretisation techniques for contact analysis are presented as a modern tool for engineering design simulations.
    This book:
  • applies to a wide variety of industrial applications,
  • starts from a sound continuum mechanics background,
  • introduces new discretisation techniques and algorithms, and
  • includes thermo-mechanical considerations and adaptive methods.
Computational Contact Mechanics has been written not only for graduate, Masters and PhD students, but also for engineers in the car, tyre and packaging industries who simulate contact problems in practical applications and need to understand the theoretical and algorithmic background of contact treatment in modern finite element systems.
