Steel Designers' Manual
7th Edition   2/21/2012
by Buick Davidson and Graham Owens ISBN: 9781405189 ISBN-13: 9781405189408
[ hide overview ]

Steel Designers` Manual In 2010 the then current European national standards for building and construction were replaced by the EN Eurocodes, a set of pan-European model building codes developed by the European Committee for Standardization. The Eurocodes are a series of 10 European Standards (EN 1990-EN 1999) that provide a common approach for the design of buildings, other civil engineering works and construction products. The design standards embodied in these Eurocodes will be used for all European public works and are set to become the de-facto standard for the private sector in Europe, with probable adoption in many other countries.
This classic manual on structural steelwork design was first published in 1955, since when it has sold many tens of thousands of copies worldwide. For the seventh edition of the Steel Designers` Manual all chapters have been comprehensively reviewed, revised to ensure they reflect current approaches and best practice, and brought in to compliance with EN 1993: Design of Steel Structures (the so-called Eurocode 3).Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

byJames Ambrose,Patrick Tripeny ISBN: ISBN-13: 9780470542606
[ hide overview ]

Building Structures The comprehensive reference on the basics of structural analysis and design, now updated with the latest considerations of building technology.
Structural design is an essential element of the building process, yet one of the most difficult to learn. While structural engineers do the detailed consulting work for a building project, architects need to know enough structural theory and analysis to design a building. Most texts on structures for architects focus narrowly on the mathematical analysis of isolated structural components, yet Building Structures looks at the general concepts with selected computations to understand the role of the structure as a building subsystem-without the complicated mathematics.
New to this edition is a??complete discussion of the LRFD method of design, supplemented by the ASD method, in addition to:
  • The fundamentals of structural analysis and design for architects
  • A glossary, exercise problems, and a companion website and instructor's manual
  • Material ideally suited for preparing for the ARE exam

  • Profusely illustrated throughout with drawings and photographs, and including new case studies, Building Structures, Third Edition is perfect for nonengineers to understand and visualize structural design.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

    Prestressed Concrete

by Lambert M. Surhone (Editor), Mariam T. Tennoe (Editor), Susan F. Henssonow (Editor) ISBN: 6133198699 ISBN-13: 9786133198692
    [ hide overview ]

Prestressed Concrete High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Prestressed concrete is a method for overcoming concrete's natural weakness in tension. It can be used to produce beams, floors or bridges with a longer span than is practical with ordinary reinforced concrete. Prestressing tendons (generally of high tensile steel cable or rods) are used to provide a clamping load which produces a compressive stress that offsets the tensile stress that the concrete compression member would otherwise experience due to a bending load. Traditional reinforced concrete is based on the use of steel reinforcement bars, rebars, inside poured concrete. Prestressing can be accomplished in three ways: pre-tensioned concrete, and bonded or unbonded post-tensioned concrete. Pre-tensioned concrete is cast around already tensioned tendons. This method produces a good bond between the tendon and concrete, which both protects the tendon from corrosion and allows for direct transfer of tension.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

    Practical Design of Steel Structures
    July 2010
by Karuna Moy Ghosh ISBN: 1439835713 ISBN-13: 9781439835715
    [ hide overview ]

Practical Design of Steel Structures Practical Design of Steel Structures presents practical design examples and calculations for a multi-bay, steel-framed industrial building under the actions of a variety of loads, including travelling crane loads, dead and imposed loads, and wind forces. For the first time, engineers and students alike can appreciate the complete design process through the analysis of the whole structure and the design of structural members. The calculations are clearly presented, employing a step-by-step approach stating the design philosophy, design considerations and clarifying the referred clauses of the code of practice.
However, before analysing the structure and the design of its structural elements, it is necessary to understand the theoretical background and how the structure behaves under the actions of various loads, based upon practical design and field experience. The author considers the structural arrangement with respect to selection and availability of construction material, the cost within the scheduled construction program and the overall budget. In addition he examines the buildability of the structure with regard to space restriction, method of construction and the geotechnical conditions of the site.
The essence of this book is the simplicity and clarity of approach in the complete analysis of the whole structure and the structural design of every member. Augmented by design sketches, this book will prove valuable to practising engineers in design offices and students on structures courses.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

    [ hide overview ]

Understanding Sructures: <br> An Introduction to Structural Analysis Before structural mechanics became the common language of structural engineers, buildings were built based on observed behavior, with every new solution incurring high levels of risk. Today, the pendulum has swung in the other direction. The web of structural mechanics is so finely woven that it hides the role of experience in design, again leading to high levels of risk.
Understanding Structures brings the art and science of structures into the environment of a computer game. The book imparts a basic understanding of how buildings and bridges resist gravity, wind, and earthquake loads. Its interactive presentation of topics spans elementary concepts of force in trusses to bending of beams and the response of multistory, multi-bay frames.
Formulate Graphical and Quantitative Solutions with GOYA The companion software, GOYA, runs easily on any java-enabled system. This interactive learning environment allows engineers to obtain quick and instructive graphical and quantitative solutions to many problems in structures.
Simulation is critical to the design and construction of safe structures. Basic Structural Theory
    May 2008
    by Jacques Heyman ISBN: 0521897947 ISBN-13: 9780521897945
    [ hide overview ]

Basic Structural Theory This text introduces the basic equations of the theory of structures. Conventional presentations of these equations follow the ideas of elastic analysis, introduced nearly two hundred years ago. The present book is written against the background of advances made in structural theory during the last fifty years, notably by the introduction of so-called plastic theory. Tests on real structures in the twentieth century revealed that structural states predicted by elastic analysis cannot in fact be observed in practice, whereas plastic ideas can be used to give accurate estimates of strength. Strength is discussed in the first part of this book without reference to equations of elastic deformation. However, the designer is concerned also with stiffness, for which elastic analysis is needed, and the standard equations (suitable, for example, for computer programming) are presented. Finally, stability is analyzed, which again is essentially an elastic phenomenon, and it is shown that a higher "factor of safety" is required to guard against buckling than that required to guarantee straightforward strength. The emphasis throughout is on the derivation and application of the structural equations, rather than on details of their solution (nowadays best done by computer), and the numerical examples are deliberately kept simple.Overview from BARNES&NOBLE (barnesandnoble.com).

    Computational Contact Mechanics
    August 2002
    by P. Wriggers ISBN: 0471496804 ISBN-13: 9780471496809
    [ hide overview ]

Computational Contact Mechanics Boundary value problems involving contact are important for industrial applications in both mechanical and civil engineering, such as structural foundations, bearings, metal forming processes, rubber sealings, drilling problems, crash analysis of cars, rolling contact between car tyres and the road, cooling of electronic devices, and many more. Other applications are related to biomechanical engineering design, where human joints, implants or teeth are considered. Due to this variety, contact problems today are combined either with large elastic or inelastic deformations, including time-dependent responses. Thermal coupling may also have to be considered, and even stability behaviour has to be linked to contact, such as wrinkling arising in metal forming problems.
The topic of computational contact is described in depth here, providing different formulations, algorithms and discretisation techniques for contact problems that have been established in the geometrically linear and nonlinear ranges. This book provides the necessary continuum mechanics background. Special geometrical relations needed to set up the contact constraints are derived, and constitutive equations stemming from tribology which are valid at the contact interface are discussed in detail, without going into a numerical treatment. Solid and beam contact is considered, as is contact of unstable systems and thermomechanical contact. The algorithmic aspects cover a broad range of solution methods. Additionally, adaptive discretisation techniques for contact analysis are presented as a modern tool for engineering design simulations.
    This book:
  • applies to a wide variety of industrial applications,
  • starts from a sound continuum mechanics background,
  • introduces new discretisation techniques and algorithms, and
  • includes thermo-mechanical considerations and adaptive methods.
Computational Contact Mechanics has been written not only for graduate, Masters and PhD students, but also for engineers in the car, tyre and packaging industries who simulate contact problems in practical applications and need to understand the theoretical and algorithmic background of contact treatment in modern finite element systems.
