tube construction v. i beam (w) construction

My engineer calls for 6x6 1/4" (approximately 11 ft. high with 2 feet in the concrete)tube posts for a carport that will carry a second story. Welded to those will be a 20 ft. steal beam. The 6x6 tubes seem really big with 6x6 beam and then joists on top. Can I weld the beams on the same plane as the posts? Can I go to a 4x4 tube with a thicker wall instead? Can I use I beams and posts instead. Any good ideas? Thanks, Matt
